In the mid-19th century a large number of explorers, scientists and curious travelers were arriving in the Yucatan attracted by the lost Mayan cities, many of them were fascinated by the great discoveries they made about Mayan culture. They described acropolis, the culture, they tried to explain Mayan science and astronomy for the first time and published books or travel chronicles that attracted more explorers and archaeologists. Many embarked from Europe bound for the Yucatan to spend days exploring deep in the jungle and upon returning to the city of Merida they arrived with fruits such as oranges, lemons, melons and other tropical fruits that they exchanged with the locals or that the landowners gave them to taste while they endured the scorching heat of the peninsula on their journey.
As they crossed the arches into the city, they asked for rooms to rent where they would organize all their discoveries, accompanied by maps, drawings, photographs, and the rest of the fruit they had left over from their journey, which filled the rooms and sometimes their tents with a sweet, fresh citrus aroma that mixed with that of their observation instruments: the cedar of their camera tripods or daguerreotypes, sandalwood traveler's tables, as well as their colognes, an aromatic mixture that defined the Panamerican Travelers.
